HUMBLE PIE" Humble Pie "(1970) - Bruno - AMELIE LES CRAYONS

A second birth
Long forgotten, or relegated as a second knife with a few "great journalists" the land of "cheese-that-stink" Humble Pie is slowly but surely fallen into oblivion, anonymity. So what in the late 80's, young wolves built their music on the ashes cold. Yet despite this occultation, or sometimes these shortcuts primary generated by a misunderstanding, Humble Pie is still one of the leading bands of the 70's.

Humble Pie was formed under the leadership of Steve Marriott , formerly co-leader and frontman of Small Faces- ( iconic group with Rod Stewart and Mods The Who, and authors of some pearls British Pop ). Steve wanted to go to a music rougher, more direct, and already, in concert, Steve gave a great impetus heavy, and some records such as "Tin Soldier " or "All or Nothing " took in concert before time, turns Zeppelinniennes. Moreover, it is no coincidence that Sir James Patrick Page had asked her sights on Steve for his New Yardbirds, but the manager of Small-Faces had the words, clear and sharp, to cool his aspirations . After attending the performance of a young band Pop, The Herd, Marriott was excited by the talent of youngster Peter Frampton . Trying to recruit him to move forward, allowing him to explore other horizons which he aspired, and his cronies while adhering to this little fad , Steve left the band to form with the young Frampton , Humble Pie. In Aparthé recall that following the demerger, Ronnie Lane, Ian MacLagan and Kenny Jones well em ... bored ( because Marriott was a guitarist, singer and composer ) after some time of uncertainty, collected two shipwrecked adventure 1 Jeff Beck Group ; in this case, Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart (!). The Small Faces amputees their original singer and guitarist, began calling themselves Faces, and from 1970 to 1973, realized four good albums of vintage Rock, blues, and sometimes close to the Stones ... of Humble Pie.

Steve and Peter hired him on bass Greg Ridley, who officiated in earlier Spooky Tooth, and drums, another youngster (17 years only) in the person Jerry Shirley of ( Steve knew the close when he played with the obscure group Apostolic Intervention, and had lobbied for them signed by soinet Immediate Record).

Thus, Humble Pie, took the form of a final quartet. Peter Frampton, guitarist elegant and fine, as comfortable in that electric sound, good singer halfway between Pop 60's and 70's rock, Heavy, Greg Ridley, singer with the voice hard and rocky, bassist voluble (compared with a John Paul Jones), Jerry Shirley, drummer precise and concise (it will follow until the last breath of Marriott Pie, in 81, then participate in the adventure " Fastway," the group of Fast Eddie Clarke) and Steve Marriott powerful singer, the guitar playing aggressive and efficient, able to demonstrate an actual draft of energy on stage. Peter, Steve and Jerry officiates each secondarily on keyboards ( in concert, it was Frampton who has served ). The strength of Humble Pie, besides the fact that all its members, including Europe's very young Shirley, had already accumulated some experience, that he was adorned with three good singers at different timbre, recognizable and interlocking with each other. Allowing them well when they took turns to provide power to the songs, so when Peter or, more occasionally Greg took the place of soloist, instead of Steve, to generate shades rewarding album.

vocals, Greg was a man's office instead of wood, backpacker-yard-long (this is older than the group with 27 years the formation of the combo), or he gargled with aqua-vita, while Peter was more Dandy's Rock. As for Steve, when he let go, it was an explosion of emotions Soul angry, vindictive, bathed in perfume Rock, Heavy. As if his frail body was struggling to contain an overflow of energy, giving the impression of an exhortation. Her body exuded a music, which had shifted its source in the African-American.

Humble Pie starts with a bang in July 1969 by a flawless first single: a boogie-rock that could effectively sound a tad conventional, but takes a different dimension with the Interaction singers, said a groove, a development unstoppable and undeniable joy of playing together, and the pie is thirsty for battle. "Natural Born Boogie " had traumatized over a future heavy-boogie-rock of the United Kingdom. (4th place in the UK charts).

Then, after the first two albums, but controversial bills, left in a hurry (although the Pie was founded April 69, two discs were published this same year), Humble Pie just missed a splitter, lead, much against them by the bankruptcy of Immediate Records. Recovered by A & M, the pie goes into overdrive and leaves in its wake, at 70, the eponymous album, where heavy rock (Hard Blues) succession to beautiful acoustic ballads (folk or country). The album is excellent, and members of their talents shine Pie composers and performers. The compositions are mature and better produced. hange forced to label seems to have given a boost to Pius as a second birth. After a few appearances of frenzy of "Town & Country " The Pie has climbed in recent months, levels of maturity. (Note, again, the excellent work of Label Directory, which reissued the disc with a remastering on top, and a packetage worthwhile).

From left to right, Frampton on organ, Fender Bass Ridley, and Marriott Gretsch .

The album begins with a "Live With Me " seminal. Long adrenaline supported by an organ omnipotent. The voices come and go, affected, bewitched, while dazzling features of the Gibson Marriott lard chorus thick and dirty this Low - Heavy-bluesy-gospel-rock.

"Only a Roach " country composition, a somewhat incongruous with the choirs of the pillars of the pub. (One of the few compositions Shirley ...)

"One Eyed Trouser Snake Rumba" back to basics for Best Heavy-boogie-rock, crushing the passage all the title contenders this year. It's heavy and groovy at the same time.

The pressure goes down with "Earth and Water Song " first romantic ballad folk, acoustic, bearing the indelible mark of Frampton, gradually wears a vest (not coat, c ' is not the same ) Power.

We leave in the crude with "I'm Ready " recovery overused by Willie Dixon, who nevertheless transpires here as the pie that the Chicago-blues most filthy, greasy guitars thanks to Peter and Steve, but also incantatory vocals Marriott, supported by Ridley who tears his vocal chords. One of the best in the genre Heavy, Hard-Blues.

"Theme from Skint , another country song, this time sounding more rock.

" Red Light Mama, Red Hot " boogie-rock mid-tempo much fat; guitars gravelly singing inhabited low round and full. Solo reduced to its simplest form (a few well-placed double bends), replaced by a plaintive harmonica, before Frampton declines a pentatonic solo in Hard-style blues. A simple pleasure.

"Sucking On The Sweet Vine," an ode almost bucolic, an acoustic part of an apparent simplicity, with a sensitivity to fleur-de-skin. Break the rock and roll sung by lumberjack Ridley. Jazzy solo Frampton. Beautiful timeless ballad.

With this album, Humble Pie realized in this year of great wines, a great disc. We forgive the bad taste ("Only a Roach"), because the rest is such a level that would be churlish to focus on the only misstep of the album. Especially since the album is provided with an excellent production, perfectly balanced even when the cymbals feature a beautiful definition.

Humble Pie, with this album, was hoisted with ease, at best Rock formations. Moreover, rather than a group of Hard-Rock, Humble Pie was just a rock band strongly influenced by Blues, even rhythm'n'blues and more filigree Gospel (this will gradually influence the magnitude, Marriott was a gran fan of Ray Charles). All played with anger, strength and conviction.
